Stiffler, Strickland bound

at tournament

Last year the Fliers were shut out from having a state qualifier for the first time in years, but that didn't happen this year as two wrestlers punched their tickets to Columbus during the Division II Northwest District Tournament held at Marion Harding High School Feb. 26-27.
Dylan Stiffler, who is a senior and last year was a state alternate, got out at 112 pounds with a third place finish. Trevor Strickland, a junior, got out at 215 with a fourth place finish.
Both wrestlers lost their second round matches and then fought their way back through the loser's bracket to place. Stiffler lost a 5-2 decision to BJ Miller of Defiance and then reeled off four straight wins with a 1:52 fall over Bobby Mason of Padua Franciscan to clinch his third place finish.
Strickland lost to Cody Bloom of Napoleon 8-0 in his second match before winning three-straight matches and then again losing to Bloom by a close 1-0 score in their battle for third place.
Billy Ward, a sophomore, placed fifth at 185 losing his state match to DJ Recknagel of Rossford 4-2 before recording a 1:38 fall over Matt Laskowski of Rocky River for fifth.
Ward will be a state alternate. Zach Thurn, a senior, placed sixth at 125 - losing his state match to Dalton Nicely of Wauseon in a 2:40 fall.
Eric Pumphrey (140), Brandon Flores (152), Brad Smith (160) and Cody Ortolani (171) were district qualifiers, but did not place.
Stiffler and Strickland will wrestle in the state tournament on March 3, 4 and 5 at Columbus at the Ohio State University.
The Fliers as a team placed ninth with 65 points. Sandusky Bay Conference rival Oak Harbor won the tournament with 177.5 points. Lexington was second at 149 and Toledo Central Catholic was third at 125.
Standings, points Top 10 are Oak Harbor 177.5, Lexington 149, Toledo Central Catholic 125, Padua Franciscan 93.5, Wapakoneta 91, Wauseon 84.5, Highland 81, Lima Bath 74.5, Clyde 65, and Holy Name 56.
Other teams included: Perkins, Celina, Defiance, Eastwood, Van Wert, Buckeye, Napoleon, Norwalk, Bellevue, Tiffin Columbian, Avon, Richfield, Bryan, Madison, Lima Shawnee, Elida, Rocky River, Bay Village, Rossford, Willard, Vermilion, Maumee, Kenton Port Clinton, Shelby, Lorain Clearview, Toledo Woodward, Fostoria, St. Marys Memorial, and Sheffield.
