Changing roles of women topic of school drama
The Oberlin High School drama club will present Wendy Wasserstein's Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning play "The Heidi Chronicles" beginning Friday.
Drama club advisor Brittnay Palermo said the show has been described as "an eloquent voice for generations of American women, from the tumultuous '60s through the isolated '80s -- a timeless journey." It follows heroine Heidi Holland (Dyani Sabin) from high school in the 1960s to her career as a successful art historian more than 20 years later, dealing with the changing roles of women during that time period.
Palermo said the straight drama is unusual for the club, which usually does comedies. But she said she did not pick this show.
"Actually it was the kids," she said. "I let them pick it. I read it, and I thought the subject was pretty good. It's actually pretty (International Baccalaureate)-centric."
Show times will be Friday, March 12, and Saturday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 14, at 2 p.m. in the Brubaker Auditorium at Oberlin High School. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens; students are free.
The OHS senior class is hosting a spaghetti dinner as a fundraiser before the performances on Friday and Saturday, from 4:30-7 p.m. at the high school cafeteria. Cost is $10 for all you can eat. Tickets will be sold at the door.
The meal includes spaghetti with a choice of meat or vegetarian sauce, salad and dressing, beverages, garlic or plain bread, and desserts.
