Childhood cancer cases to be studied in east half of county
The Sandusky County Health Department, the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio EPA have expanded the former Clyde Childhood Cancer Study area to include all of Eastern Sandusky County, encompassing parts of Fremont.
Rebecca Holland, director of Health Planning & Education for the Sandusky County Health Department, said the expansion is not new and had been discussed in 2009. The agencies are still looking at cases of pediatric cancer.
"This has been talked about. There isn't anything changing," she said.
These partners would like to include as much health information as possible from affected families.
In 2009, 35 children were reportedly being included in the study.
Holland said a public appeal to call the health department could make contacting affected families easier.
The agencies are currently requesting information from persons, or family members of persons, who may be candidates to be included in the study.

Persons diagnosed with cancer should have the following criteria: Diagnosed since 1996, diagnosed with any type of cancer at age 19 or younger, lived in eastern Sandusky County at the time of diagnoses.
Persons are asked to contact the Sandusky County Health Department to talk with the Director of Nursing, Dawn Mason, or the Director of Environmental Health, Mary Dennis. Even if you are not sure if you or your family member might be a part of the study area, please call for more information at 419-334-6377.
Holland said that not all Fremont is in the survey, but even if an address of a Fremont resident is not in the study area, the health department will log the information in case it may be useful in the future.
